Aprašymas
As a young boy, little Tomi Reichental lived an idyllic life, in Merašice, Slovakia, surrounded by the love of a big family. But one day it all changed. And then his nightmare began.
This retelling by Eithne Massey is based on Tomi’s experiences as a young boy.
It started with name calling, local attitudes, of schoolmates and neighbours, changed and soon Tomi began to feel different in the village he once described as ‘paradise’. New, restrictive laws came in, schools were closed to them and stars were sewn on their coats to identify them as Jewish. Hiding became normal as guards went from village to village hunting for Jews to arrest. Young Tomi and his family heard terrible stories of what was happening in concentration camps across Europe. Stories which became a horrifying reality when they were captured by the Gestapo and deported to Bergen-Belsen camp in Germany.
‘At the age of six, I began to fear for the future. One day we said goodbye to cousins, aunts and uncles. We never saw them again. By the age of nine, I was on the run for my life and later ended up in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. By the time I was ten, I had seen all there was to see.’
